Safety tips for entering a home
As agents, we enter homes regularly and often times those entrances, especially in areas you are unfamiliar with, can warrant a sense of caution. Ensuring your safety during this process is paramount. Welcoming safety measures into your daily routine can help prevent accidents and potential unexpected dangers. Here are some essential safety tips to consider each time you enter a home with a client.
1. Before stepping inside, take a moment to evaluate the home’s exterior. Look for any unusual signs or disturbances around the entryway.
- Ensure the entrance is well-lit. Dimly lit areas can indicate potential hazards or lack of maintenance.
- Observe the surroundings for suspicious activity or unfamiliar individuals lingering nearby.
- Check for trip hazards such as loose bricks, uneven steps, or clutter that may cause you to trip or fall.
2. When entering a home during a showing, it's crucial to keep your belongings secure.
- If you’re carrying bags, consider using a crossbody bag to free up your hands.
3. Upon entering the home, knock (or ring a doorbell) and announce yourself. You never want to surprise homeowners!
- Establishing this presence, gives notice to those inside, allowing them to prepare to welcome you into their home.
- If you knock and receive no response, be cautious. It's wise to wait and listen to see whether anyone is home.
- If necessary, glance through windows as you approach the front door to gauge activity in common areas.
4. Trust Your Gut!!
- If something feels off, trust your gut and consider leaving the premises. If you choose to wait for someone that you trust to arrive, consider doing so outside in a safe place.
- If you encounter someone who seems dangerous or aggressive, prioritize your safety and distance yourself! Do not try to confront them, avoid any confrontations if possible.
5. Once you have entered the home, take immediate steps for your safety. Openly communicate about safety protocols with your clients by pointing out all exterior doors and safety features the home offers.
- Ensure the door is closed behind you, and possibly even locked.
6. Familiarizing yourself with emergency procedures while within the home is essential.
- Know where the fire exits are and how to access them.
- Ensure you have the contact numbers for local emergency services and the home’s address readily available. Consider placing local emergency contact numbers in your cell phone.
Safety is often forgot about when entering a home for showings. As agents, we are entering homes frequently and establish routines of complacency. By taking the time to observe your surroundings, secure your belongings, and maintain awareness of your environment, you can significantly increase safety for yourself and your clients. Remember, being proactive is the key to ensuring that every entry into a home is a safe and pleasant experience. Stay vigilant, trust your gut, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help if something doesn’t feel right.
